Habitat:  Open Water, Native Grassland, Lawn. College campus with panoramic view of Lake Michigan from atop a bluff.

Best Birds:  Fall raptor migration is often intimate, at eye-level or above the birds passing along the top edge of the bluff. Broad-winged Hawk, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Merlin, Northern Harrier, Osprey, American Kestrel, and Peregrine Falcon may migrate through in impressive daily numbers. Cooper’s Hawk, Bald Eagle, Red-shouldered Hawk, Rough-legged Hawk  and Northern Goshawk are regular late fall migrants, and there is always the potential for Golden Eagle, Swainson’s Hawk, or Mississippi Kite.

Scope Lake Michigan for waterfowl including scoters, grebes, and loons; shorebirds, hundreds of swallows and Chimney Swift, and Common Nighthawk.  Dozens of Ruby-throated Hummingbird may buzz past at eye level during September, as well as migrating warblers, sparrows, and winter finches.

Directions:  Concordia is on the E end of Highland Rd, just east of I-43.  Enter off Highland Rd (south side of campus). To  receive permission to enter the campus, stop at the entry gate and state that you wish to watch the hawk migration.  Park in the southeasternmost corner of the parking area nearest the lake.  Walk to the bluff.  The farther south you go, the better the view of approaching raptors from the north.
