Hawthorne Road Ponds

Habitat:  Marsh, Open Water, Cropland.  on NE corner of intersection, pond on NW corner of intersection, and extensive cropland on SW corner of intersection.

Best Birds:  The cattail marsh is home to Sora, Willow Flycatcher, Marsh Wren, and occasionally Virginia Rail, Least Bittern, and American BitternPurple Martins nest adjacent/east of the marsh.  When flooded, the pond to the NW provides habitat for Spotted Sandpiper, Solitary Sandpiper, Wilson’s Phalarope, and Long-billed Dowitcher.  The extensively flooded field on the SW corner may hold White-fronted Goose, Snow Goose, Northern Pintail, Great Egret, and Bonaparte’s Gull, or shorebirds such as American Avocet, Long-billed and Short-billed Dowitcher, Willet, Marbled Godwit, Hudsonian Godwit, Black-bellied Plover and White-rumped SandpiperNorthern Harrier and Vesper Sparrow breed in the area.

Directions: 5 miles NW of Port Washington/ 3 miles south of Fredonia, and one mile east of Hwy 57.
