The Lemonweir River is a medium-size stream that drains northeastern Monroe County before flowing eastward to join the Wisconsin River in Juneau County. The Lemonweir was channelized in the early 20th century but this stretch of the mainstem is bordered by a broad floodplain laced with sloughs, oxbows, and ponds. The major habitat is bottomland hardwoods (“Floodplain Forest”), composed mostly of Silver Maple, Swamp White Oak, River Birch, and Green Ash. Less extensive habitats include shrub swamp (variable composition, including Buttonbush).
