County Highway ‘EW’ Cranberry Flowages and Wetlands

https://ebird.org/hotspot/L16266850

Habitats: Open Water, Marsh, Shrub Swamp.

Best Birds: Notable birds include Trumpeter Swan, Common Loon, Double-crested Cormorant, American White Pelican, Osprey and Bald Eagle. A diverse array of waterfowl, waders, and shorebirds should be expected during migration periods when water levels are favorable. Scan the dead trees for raptors and nesting herons.

Directions: 63 miles NE of La Crosse/3 miles east of the village of Warrens on County Hwy EW to the cranberry flowages along the road. Park at one of the pull-offs used by fishermen and scan the water and any nearby wetlands. Work your way toward the flowages farther east.

Site Address & Additional Information:

This site is centered on a concentration of cranberry farms and features extensive areas of open water (reservoirs, flowages, and ditches) with scattered patches of associated wetlands. Many of the inundated White Pine that formerly provided secure nesting sites for various waders, raptors, and other birds associated with open water have fallen, reducing nesting opportunities for some of these species.
