Lake Express Ferry Terminal

https://ebird.org/hotspot/L1342167

Habitat: Non-native Grassland, Open Water, Mudflats.

Best Birds: This location provides an excellent vantage point to search the breakwalls and open harbor of Lake Michigan. To the north, the grassy areas of the old Coast Guard Impoundment are a good spot in winter for raptors, American Tree-Sparrow, and the rock pile behind the ferry terminal is one of the most reliable spots in the state to view Snowy Owl. The nearby breakwall or harbor ice usually holds Great Black-backed Gull and should be searched carefully for other winter gulls.  A large colony of Cliff Swallow can be seen under the freeway bridge near here. Further north of the ferry terminal along S. Lincoln Memorial Drive, an old petroleum pier hosts a large group of ducks throughout the fall until the harbor freezes. Check carefully here for scoters, Ruddy Duck, loons and grebes.

Directions: In the City of Milwaukee. From the 794 Bypass take Carferry Drive east to S. Lincoln Memorial Drive.  Park in the ferry lot.
