Franklin Landfill

https://ebird.org/hotspot/L3292993

Habitat:  Non-native Grassland, Successional Oldfield.

Best Birds: This active landfill also has some extensive grassland habitat.  It is a great spot to search for wintering raptors including Bald Eagle and is the most reliable location in the county to observe Rough-legged Hawk.  Many gulls feed here during the day year round. In the winter expect Great Black-backed and Glaucous Gull among the common species.  Open pastures nearby are good for resident Horned Lark and American Pipit in migration.  Rusty Blackbird are often observed in migration amongst the large blackbird flocks. The grassland habitat is great for breeding Dickcissel, Bobolink and occasionally Henslow’s Sparrow.

Directions:  Located in Franklin in the SW corner of Milwaukee County.  Bordered on the north by Oakwood Road and on the south by County Line Road, between 116th Street and 124th Street.  The best grasslands are on the south and east sides of the landfill. 116th street is a good place to view the gulls as is Oakwood.
