McMillan Marsh State Wildlife Area – McMillan Marsh Lane and Marsh Road Access Areas

Habitat: Northern Hardwood Forest, Open Water, Native and Restored Grassland, Non-Native Grassland and Pasture, Marsh, Sedge Meadow, Willow and Alder Swamp, Bottomland Hardwoods.

Best Birds: From either parking lot take the trails into the marsh and woodland areas to view summer birds like American Bittern, Black-billed Cuckoo, Willow Flycatcher. Every so often one of the flowages is drawn down, and if done at the right time of year, migrant shorebirds will appear. Such interesting sightings as American Avocet, Black-bellied Plover, Marbled Godwit, Buff-breasted Sandpiper, and Red-necked Phalarope have occurred.

During migration stay alert for such birds like Olive-sided Flycatcher, Philadelphia Vireo, Swainson’s Thrush, Lincoln’s Sparrow, Black-throated Blue Warbler, and more. Also, a nice variety of waterfowl does occur during migration. Watch for American Wigeon, Green-winged Teal and more in the flowages. 

During the winter season there can be winter finches around, plus Northern Shrike, Rough-legged Hawk and local resident birds.

Directions: 44 miles SW of wausau/a mile north of Marshfield, WI, the first parking lot is off of Mann Street on McMillan Marsh Lane (44.703366, -90.185206), and the second parking lot is off of Highway E that dead ends at the end of Marsh Road (44.731469, -90.175250).
