Wisconsin Riverwoods Trail

https://ebird.org/wi/hotspot/L8435658

Habitat: Bottomland Hardwoods, Pine Plantation, Willow, Alder or Dogwood Swamp, Mixed Coniferous Forest, Open Water.

Best Birds: The paved trail runs along Wisconsin River and its backwaters for 1.5 miles, from Main Street in Mosinee (State Highway 153) all the way south to Edgewood Park. Red-bellied Woodpecker and Tufted Titmouse are common year-round residents. Pine Warbler is often found during the summer in the pine woods just north of Chuck’s Boat Landing. Carolina Wren has been recorded in the past along the boardwalk.

South of Chuck’s Boat Landing many seasonal migrants, as well as summer nesting birds such as Barred Owl, Yellow-throated Vireo, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher and Scarlet Tanager can be found.

Just before the parking lot at Edgewood Park, residential bird feeders (easily seen from the trail) often attract resident Pileated Woodpecker, Tufted Titmouse, and Common Redpoll (winter). The swampy woodlands below the parking lot at Edgewood Park will often harbor a Belted Kingfisher during the winter when open water is present, and occasionally Red-shouldered Hawk during the summer.

Directions: 15 miles south of Wausau. In Mosinee, take Fremont Street to the east, down a small hill, until you come to Chuck’s Boat Landing on the Wisconsin River. Park here and find the paved trail along the river’s edge and follow it north or south in either direction.
