Mission Lake Road Bog

https://ebird.org/wi/hotspot/L1176949

Habitat: Conifer Bog, Cedar Swamp, Sedge Meadow, Alder Swamp, Mixed Coniferous Forest, Northern Hardwood Forest.

Best Birds: YOU MUST stay along the roadside while birding anywhere on this road, as all land off of the road is private property. Starting on the west end, check the tall dead snag trees to the north for migrant Olive-sided Flycatcher. Also in this area are nesting American Bittern and Alder Flycatcher. Drive slowly to the east and stay alert for singing Golden-crowned Kinglet and Lincoln’s Sparrow (a few of both nests here). When you reach this area, listen for singing Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Hermit Thrush, White-throated Sparrow, and both Nashville and Yellow-rumped Warbler, which all nest in this central area of the bog.

Along the eastern side of this bog, again check the dead snag trees along the north side of the road for migrant Olive-sided Flycatcher. In the alder thicket, check for nesting Alder Flycatcher and Northern Waterthrush. Also watch the sky for soaring and calling Red-shouldered Hawk, which are believed to nest just north of here. During the winter months check for winter finches anywhere along this bog.

Directions: 25 miles SE of Wausau/approximately 11 miles south of Hatley. From State Highway 29, take Highway Y south for 7.5 miles to Mission Lake Road and then go 2.5 miles to the west end of the bog (44.784018, -89.339370). Continue along this road to the east end of the bog (44.784048, -89.308103), 1.5 miles away.
