Isle of Ferns Park

Habitat: Urban Park, Bottomland Hardwoods.

Best Birds: After crossing over the Wisconsin River on the foot bridge, take any of the trails to explore this small island. Summer nesting birds will include Great Crested Flycatcher, Warbling Vireo, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher and American Redstart. Watch overhead for Chimney Swift and swallows, and also along the Wisconsin River for Wood Duck or Hooded Merganser

Migrant warblers may include Black-throated Blue, Prothonotary and Connecticut.  Thrushes also find this park appealing, with Swainson’s, Gray-cheeked Thrushes, and Veery being the most likely of the spotted thrushes. Other migrants to look for might include Blue-headed Vireo, and Scarlet Tanager.

Directions: Just south of Downtown Wausau. On the east side of the Thomas Street bridge, turn north onto River Drive and continue to the parking lot entrance. Park (44.953434, -89.628722). cross over the wide pedestrian bridge to the island.
