George W. Mead State Wildlife Area – Rangeline Flowage

https://ebird.org/wi/hotspot/L1427753

Habitat: Open Water, Marsh, and Mudflats (occasionally),

Best Birds: In spring this flowage attracts a wide variety of waterfowl. Ring-necked Ducks are abundant, and will be joined by Redhead, Northern Shoveler, Gadwall and more. Also watch for Trumpeter Swan, Sandhill Crane, Common Loon, and Yellow-headed Blackbird, all of which nest here in the summer months. On occasion, the water level on the flowage will be drawn down at certain times of the spring or fall and shorebirds can be present. Shorebird sightings have included; Marbled Godwit, Ruddy Turnstone, Dunlin, White-rumped Sandpiper and more.

Back at the parking lot, walking the road to the south (watch for traffic) can also be productive. A short embankment and ditch will divide the road from the flowage, but the flowage will be visible from the roadside. Check the tree lined, east side of the roadway for woodland birds. This is a good area for Rusty Blackbird in spring and fall. Also watch for a variety of warblers, cuckoos, and more.

Directions: Located 12 miles east of Marshfield on the far west end of the Mead property. Turn south off of Highway C onto Rangeline Road, and go approximately 2.8 miles to a parking lot (44.702741, -89.963990) on the east side of the road. Park here, cross over the road, walk 100 feet north to the entrance on the west side that will lead you along the northern side of the flowage.

Site Address & Additional Information:

A spotting scope is recommended for distant viewing of the flowage.

Restrooms are available at the Stanton W. Mead Education & Visitor Center. Outdoor restrooms are also available approximately 200 yards west of the visitor center.
