George W. Mead State Wildlife Area – Warbler Woods

Habitat: Northern Hardwood Forest, Southern Hardwood Forest, Bottomland Hardwoods

Best Birds: From the parking lot cross over Hwy S and enter the woods beyond the cable gate. This small wooded area, located on the banks of the Little Eau Pleine River, attracts a nice variety of warblers, flycatchers, thrushes and other woodland birds during migration, including Golden-winged, Cape May, Northern Parula, Magnolia, Blackburnian, and Blackpoll. Other migrant birds to watch for include Olive-sided Flycatcher, Philadelphia Vireo, Gray-cheeked Thrush, and White-throated Sparrow

Summer nesting birds include Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Least Flycatcher, Warbling Vireo, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Wood Thrush, and American Redstart. Check the nearby bridge over the river for nesting Cliff Swallow.

Directions: 32 miles SW of wausau/approximately 16.5 driving miles southwest of Mosinee. located on Highway S, 1.3 miles south of Highway C, or 1.2 miles north of the Stanton W. Mead Education & Visitor Center.
