George W. Mead State Wildlife Area – Visitor Center

Habitat: Native and Restored Grassland, Marsh, Open Water, Alder, and Northern Hardwood Forest. 

Best Birds: If open, stop at the visitor center to pick up a map and checklist, and ask about sightings. A trail starts on the north side of the visitor center and goes northeast through grassland, around the wetlands, through an alder thicket and forest, and back to the visitor center. Nesting Sedge Wren and Savannah Sparrow can be found in the grassy areas, Ring-necked Duck (occasionally) and Eastern Kingbird breed in the marsh, Alder Flycatcher and Northern Waterthrush are found in the alders, and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Great Crested Flycatcher, and Veery breed in the forest

Bird feeders at the visitor center attract Ruby-throated Hummingbird and sparrows in season, including Harris’s.

Directions: 25 miles SW of Wausau. The visitor center (44.694847, -89.865302) is located on County Highway S, 2.7 miles south of County Highway C. If the gate to the parking lot /visitor center is closed (where pavement starts), then pull off to the right into a smaller, unpaved parking lot (44.695576, -89.861511). There is an informational kiosk across from the gate that has maps, bird checklist, etc.

Clean restrooms available for use if visitor center open. If closed, outdoor restrooms available 200 yards west of the visitor center.
