New Amsterdam Grasslands

New Amsterdam Grasslands (Mississippi Valley Conservance), La Crosse County, WI, US – eBird Hotspot

Habitat: Native and Restored Grassland, Sand Prairie, Successional Oldfield.

Best Birds:  Eurasian Collared Dove, Northern Harrier, Willow Flycatcher, Bell’s Vireo, Sedge Wren, Cedar Waxwing, Grasshopper, Clay-colored, Vesper, and Henslow’s Sparrow, Bobolink, Orchard Oriole, Dickcissel. The wind row hedges surrounding some blocks of grassland are made up of fruit trees that attract thrushes and Cedar Waxwing during the winter months.

Directions: 17 miles N of La Crosse. The New Amsterdam Grasslands are located south of Hwy 35 just west of Holmen.  The parking area to access trails is located on the north side of Old CTH NA about 0.8 mile east of County Hwy XX.  35 acres of the property is open year-round but the majority is closed to access during the nesting season (April thru July).  There are developed trails surrounding blocks of grassland.
