Habitat: Oak Hickory Forest, Southern Hardwood Forest, Goat Prairie, Cropland, Successional Oldfield, Non-Native Grassland and Pasture.

Best Birds:  Great winter raptor location with Golden and Bald Eagle, Red-tailed and Rough-legged Hawk, and American Kestrel regularly seen.  Others include Wild Turkey, Ring-necked Pheasant, Pileated Woodpecker, Northern Shrike, and over-wintering sparrows. Golden Eagle arrive in November and stay until early March.  They perch on the wooded hillsides and can be seen soaring over the ridgetops and valleys when not perched.  Best time to see the Golden Eagle soaring is usually 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.  When perched, they are usually located just below the ridge line and are rarely on prominent perches.  They prefer large branches and are often close to the main trunk of the tree.  This makes them fairly tough to see. Check the largest trees on the upper 1/3 of the hillsides.

Directions: 22 miles SE of La Crosse. The Coon Creek/Timber Coulee Valley area is located east of the town of Coon Valley along County Road P and its tributary valleys including the southern parts of County PI, County G, County X, and Oakdale Avenue.  This area is on the La Crosse/Vernon/Monroe County line with the north side of the valley mostly in La Crosse County, the south side of the valley in Vernon County and Oakdale Avenue in Monroe County.
