Kewaunee Harbor, Kewaunee County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot
Habitat: Open Water, Beach.
Best Birds: The breakwall off of Father Marquette Park is a reliable spot for shorebirds including Whimbrel, Black-bellied Plover, and Ruddy Turnstone. The small beach there can attract Spotted, Least, and Semipalmated Sandpiper, Short-billed Dowitcher and Marbled Godwit. Peregrine Falcon and Merlin can be seen searching for prey, as well as an occasional Bald Eagle, Snowy Owl, and Northern Shrike. A small trail that loops around the impoundment to the northeast is rough but holds sparrows including White-throated, White-crowned, and Swamp.
The walkway to the lighthouse and Inner Harbor provides loafing sites for Great and Lesser Black-backed Gull, Iceland Gull and resident Herring and Ring-billed Gull. Bonaparte’s and Little Gull are possible in spring and summer.
Open water provides refuge for White-winged Scoter, Long-tailed Duck, and Common and Red-throated Loon, among more common waterfowl.
