East and West Alaska Lake Area

West Alaska Lake, Kewaunee County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot

Habitat: Open Water, Cropland, Mixed Coniferous Forest.  West Alaska Lake is surrounded by remnants of the Mixed Coniferous Forest, while East Alaska Lake is surrounded by residences and a golf course.  

Best Birds: West Alaska Lake is surrounded by a forest that has Great Horned Owl, Winter Wren, and Chestnut-sided Warbler. The open water can host a variety of waterfowl with Hooded Merganser and Wood Duck residing here.

East Alaska Lake is more open with it being reliable for Ring-necked Duck and Common Loon. Bald Eagle usually perch around the lake. 

The fields around the Alaska Lakes area can be particularly good for shorebirds including Black-bellied and American Golden-plover, Short-billed Dowitcher, both yellowlegs, and a variety of peeps. These areas allow Bonaparte’s Gull and Caspian Tern to rest, as they are located less than a mile from Lake Michigan. 

Directions: 29 miles E of Green Bay/6 miles north of Kewaunee.  These sites are located on CTH-D, just west of HWY 42.  Both lakes have parking areas/boat launches that offer best viewing with West Alaska Lake’s at 44.5430, -87.5036 while East Alaska Lake’s is off 7th Rd (44.5495, -87.4975).  The best agricultural field for shorebirds is looking east on CTH-D at 44.5561, -87.5008, but on private land, so stay on the shoulder of road.
