Kenosha Harbor

Habitat: Open water. 

Best birds: This site is best known for migrant waterfowl and wintering gulls. Some species that have been seen at this location include Long-tailed Duck, White-winged Scoter, Red-throated Loon, Iceland Gull, Thayer’s Gull, and Lesser Black-backed Gull. Scan the jetty east of the harbor with a spotting scope for shorebirds and gulls during migration. The beach at Simmons Island Park which is close by can also be a spot to check for gulls, terns, and shorebirds. There are a few trees in this park which may also hold migrants.

Directions: 40 miles south of Milwaukee in Kenosha.  From Highway 32 in Kenosha, head east on 54th street. There is a small parking lot at the intersection of 54th Street and 6th Avenue, (42.587184, -87.818495). You can view the harbor along 54th street east of the small parking lot where there is a walking trail that leads east to the lake, (42.587628, -87.815045). Good viewing of the harbor is also available in the parking lot of the hotel just north on 6th avenue, (42.589885, -87.818677). North of this parking lot is a small marina which an also hold waterfowl and wintering ducks. You can also drive north of the harbor to access more of the marina on Harbor Drive, (42.591944, -87.817744). Parking for Simmons Island is at 42.59054, -87.81449.
