Habitat: Jack Pine-Oak Barrens, Oak Savanna, Sedge Meadow, Open Water, and Alder/Willow Swamp.
Best birds: The observation deck is probably the best spot in the refuge to observe Whooping Crane. Other wetland species of special interest are Trumpeter Swan, American Bittern, and the occasional Red-shouldered Hawk soaring overhead.
The Boghaunter Trail environs is early succession upland habitat that harbors Red-headed Woodpecker, Lark Sparrow, Henslow’s Sparrow, Dickcissel, and recently Bell’s Vireo. A nighttime visit in summer should produce Common Nighthawk and Whip-poor-will.
Directions: From the Necedah NWR Visitor Center travel west and north via 20th St./w Canal Road 1.8 miles to the access lane for the trail.
