Habitat: Southern Hardwood Forest, Jack Pine-Oak Barrens, Sedge Meadow, Open Wate,r and Alder/Willow Swamp.

Best birds: The road bisecting Goose Pond and the Sparge-Mather Flowage is the best spot for observing open water species such asTrumpeter Swan,  Common Loon, Black Tern, and  American Bittern,.

To the south is a large area of early succession barrens that harbors Red-headed Woodpecker, Lark Sparrow, and Dickcissel. In winter, Golden Eagle may be seen.

The outflow area is outstanding for migrants when cold temperatures limit food availability to water borne insects.  A nighttime visit in summer should produce Common Nighthawk and Whip-poor-will

Directions: 68 miles NE of LaCrosse. From the Necedah NWR Visitor Center travel 8.7 miles via the Bewick Trail auto tour road (44.14329, -90.19157).
