Lemonweir Bottomland Hardwood Forest SNA

https://ebird.org/hotspot/L6099555

Habitat: Native and Restored Grassland, Successional Oldfield, Bottomland Hardwoods, Open Water.

Best birds: This seldom visited site offers opportunities not found elsewhere in the county. The access road bisects a no entry private prairie restoration. Stops along this road can produce Willow Flycatcher, Eastern Meadowlark, Grasshopper Sparrow, Henslow’s Sparrow, and Dickcissel.

Park at the roundabout and walk the trail through successional oldfield and native prairie keeping an eye out for Brown Thrasher and Field Sparrow.

After several hundred meters the trail descends a short hill to the preserved bottomland hardwood forest and its oxbows. This habitat consistently produces Red-shouldered Hawk and Prothonotary Warbler, and occasionally Yellow-crowned Night-Heron.  A nighttime visit in summer may produce Common Nighthawk

Directions: 66 miles NNW of Madison/10.9 miles east of Mauston city center via Hwys. 82, HH and Arens Road.
