Habitat: Mixed Coniferous Forest.
Best birds: This preserved old white/red pine/oak forest harbors many species that usually nest much farther north. Species of special interest include Blue-headed Vireo, Hermit Thrush, Pine Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, Hooded Warbler and Canada Warbler. A nighttime visit in summer may produce Long-eared Owl and Whip-poor-will.
Directions: 67 miles NE of LaCrosse/ 42.9 miles north of Mauston city center via Hwys. I-90, 12, 173 and Cranberry Road. From the parking spot (44.211408, -90.310464) follow the maintenance road through oaks into the old conifer forest. For those unable to walk distances, similar habitat lies along 5th St, the next road to the south.
