Dorothy Carnes Park and Rose Lake SNA

Habitat: 512 acres and nine miles of trails. Open Water, Marsh, Native or Restored Grassland, and Oak Savanna.

Best birds: American Wigeon, Bufflehead, Canvasback and Redhead are among the waterfowl that may be seen on the lake. 

Common Gallinule, Spotted Sandpiper, Black Terns, Rusty Blackbird, and Yellow-headed Blackbird, can be found in the wetlands.

The grassland is home to American Kestrel, Eastern Bluebird, and sparrows on the west and Eastern Meadowlark and Bobolink on the east.

Woodland species feature American Woodcock, Barred Owl, Tufted Titmouse, Brown Thrasher near the edges, and Scarlet Tanager. Woodpeckers, Orchard Oriole, and other passerines habit the oak savanna.

Feeders on the viewing platform near the lake host a variety of small songbirds. Purple Martin are found in a colony near the parking lot on the west side.

Directions: 25 miles ESE of Madison. West (main) entrance (42.962426, -88.877658) is off Radloff Lane from Highway 12 on the west side of Fort Atkinson. East entrance (42.963064, -88.856519) is off Banker Road. There is also a parking lot off Hoard Road on the south end of the SNA (42.950491, -88.876025).
