Habitat: Conifer Bog, Mixed Coniferous Forest, Sedge Meadow.
Best birds: This “island” is a large sedge meadow with concentric rings of small, mid-sized and mature conifers surrounding the open areas. The denser forest areas hold Blue-headed Vireo, Winter Wren, Veery, White-throated Sparrow, Golden-winged Warbler, and Connecticut Warbler.
The open sedge meadow has consistently produced American Bittern, Least Bittern, Merlin, and Henslow’s Sparrow.
A nighttime visit in summer should produce Northern Saw-whet Owl.
Birding from Eckern Road is good for wetland species.
Directions: 50 miles SW of Stevens Point/27.7 miles east of Black River Falls city center via Main St., Hwy 54, Ellis Road and Eckern Road to a parking area (44.313719, -90.377140). Cross the shallow water ditch and walk south ½ mile into this vast wild site.
