Moose Lake Natural Area

Habitat: Northern Hardwoods, Mixed Conifer Forest, Alder Swamp, Open Water. 

Best Birds: Northern Goshawk, Bald Eagle, Canada Jay, Winter Wren, Black-throated Blue Warbler, and other boreal forest specialists. Good area for migratory warblers  and thrushes.

Directions: 20 miles S of ironwood, MI/7 miles N of Mercer. This is a remote area with poor roads. The northern third of the SNA is accessible from Moose Lake Road. From Hwy 51 follow Moose Lake Road 3 miles. On the west side of the Moose Creek crossing there is parking on south side of road (46.222660, -90.206354). An Unmarked trail goes south. Both sides of road are included in natural area. Another access point is the boat landing on Moose Lake Access Road (46.227991, -90.214347) which is west of Kaiser Road. Canoe or kayak is needed to get to Moose Lake. There is also a boat landing on Little Moose Lake a little further south on the same access road, 46.2248846, -90.215759.

Site Address & Additional Information:   

Included are old growth stands of Eastern Hemlock and White Cedar and younger stands of cedar. North of road is a cedar and spruce deer yard. Protected area is surrounded by county and commercial forests being harvested aggressively, providing a mix of younger forests. Includes Moose Lake, Little Moose Lake and Moose Creek.
