Mounds View Grassland

Habitat:  The habitat is made up of Native Grassland, Cropland, Successional Oldfields, and Oak Savannah.

Best Birds: Upland Sandpiper, Northern Harrier, Clay-colored Sparrow, Grasshopper Sparrow, Henslow’s Sparrow, Bobolink, Western Meadowlark, and Dickcissel nest here.   

Species that can found in winter include Rough-legged Hawk, Short-eared Owl, and Northern Shrike.  

 Bird species found in the savanna and shrubland include Black-billed Cuckoo, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Red-headed WoodpeckerBell’s Vireo, Eastern Towhee, and Orchard Oriole

Directions:26 miles SW of Madison, between Barneveld and Blue Mounds.  From the intersection of Hwy 18/151 and CTH-F, go south on F for 5.5 miles, and turn right on Reilly Road to the parking area for the Schurch-Thomson Prairie (42.949165, -89.86695).  Access to the Shea Prairie section of the preserve from the east side of Mounds View Road, ¾ miles south from the intersection of Mounds View and Prairie Grove Road.

Mounds View Grassland is comprised of three different sections (Schurch-Thomson Prairie, A-Z Farm, and Shea Prairie) and is a total of 572 acres.
