Cadiz Springs State Recreation Area

Habitat: Open Water, Southern Hardwood Forest, Successional Oldfield, Pine Plantation, Beaches and Mudflats, Marsh.

Best Birds: All three scoters, diving ducks Eared Grebe, and Common Loon, can be found. Bell’s Vireo and White-eyed Vireo have been found along the trails southeast of the lakes.  Acadian Flycatcher and Blue-winged Warbler are found east of Allen Road. 

The wooded areas will turn up Pileated Woodpecker and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.  The Hwy 11 wetlands can be scoped from the roadside.  The wetland is the best location to find waders, shorebirds, and dabbling ducks.  A few of the species found here include Trumpeter Swan, Black-necked Stilt, White-faced Ibis,, and Yellow-headed Blackbird.

Directions: 48 miles SSW of Madison. From Monroe travel west 8 miles on Hwy 11.  Turn left on Cadiz Spring Road to the park entrance (42.584110, -89.767396). There is a trail entering the Browntown Oak Forest SNA at this point (42.58600, -89.77196). Travel .5 miles past Cadiz Springs Rd to observe the private wetlands from the roadside (42.588899, -89.786377).

Site Address & Additional Information:

Many miles of trails in the park will take you through multiple habitats.  Beckman Lake is the only deep water site in Green County.
