Swamp Road and Snake Creek Wetlands

Swamp Road and Snake Creek Wetland Trail, Green Lake County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot

Habitat: Sedge Meadow, Willow, Alder or Dogwood Swamp, and Tamarack Swamp.

Best Birds: Typical breeding birds of the Snake Creek Wetlands are Sandhill Crane, Northern Harrier, both Willow and Alder Flycatcher, Sedge Wren, and  Swamp Sparrow.

Directions: 54 miles SW of Appleton. Swamp Road is located about 3.5 miles east of Princeton, and accessible from County Road J from the north or Old Green Lake Road from the south. Birding from the roadside on Swamp Road provides access to all the habitats in this site, but one can also hike the Snake Creek Wetlands Trail along a former railroad bed from its west end on Swamp Road (43.85852, -89.05741). The trail extends about 2.5 miles to its east terminus at St. Marie Road (43.86474, -89.00679). It is open to the public for hiking during most of the year, but may be closed during part of the fall for deer hunting. During the winter it is a snowmobile trail. Snake Creek Fen Natural Area is located along the north side of the wetlands trail about a mile east of Swamp Road.
