Laona/Scattered Rice Lake

Habitat:  Residential, Northern Hardwoods, Marsh, Willow, Adler or Dogwood Swamp, Mixed Coniferous Forest, Open Water.

Best Birds:  Look for a variety of waterfowl on Scattered Rice Lake, including Trumpeter SwanChimney Swift are common in the residential areas.  Both Virginia and Sora Rail and both Great Blue and Green Heron are common along the marsh.  Listen for flycatchers, vireos, and thrushes along this marsh road.  Both Bohemian and Cedar Waxwing are possible in the many fruiting trees as well as winter finches in irruptive years.  Uncommon warblers include, Northern Waterthrush, Golden-winged, Black-and-White, Mourning Warbler, and Northern Parula.

Directions:  44.5 miles from Iron Mountain, MI. The lake can be viewed from local roads north of US Highway 8, 45.565722, -88.690400 and including at the bridge on the southwest corner of Scattered Rice Lake, 45.56657, -88.69588.
