Crandon - Lake Metonga

Habitat:  Urban/Residential, Cedar Swamp, Hardwood Swamp, Marsh, Northern Hardwood Forest, Beaches and Mudflats, Open Water.

Best Birds:  Look for Common Loon and other waterfowl on Lake Metonga. Duck species may include both Greater and Lesser Scaup and all three mergansers.  Both Pied-billed and Red-necked Grebe have been recorded.  Woodpeckers, flycatchers, thrushes, and warblers are often along the eastern and southern shore of the lake.  Uncommon warblers may include Northern Waterthrush, Mourning, Northern Parula, Blackburnian, and Black-throated Green.  During irruptive years the many feeders and fruit trees in town often have winter finches and Bohemian Waxwing.  

Directions:  27 miles from Rhinelander, WI.  On South Prospect Ave, south of US Highway 8 is the north Lake Metonga Boat Landing.  45.559558, -88.897270. A southside boat landing is at 45.521636, -88.902203. Peshtigo Lake, 45.581889, -88.900362, on the northern edge of town has an extensive marsh with good possibilities for wetland species.
