Habitat: Non-Native Grassland and Pasture, Cropland, Northern Hardwoods, Hardwood Swamp, Urban/Residential/Industrial, Open Water.
Best Birds: Waterfowl along the Menominee River include Bufflehead, Hooded Merganser, and Common Merganser. Good views are available at the Aurora boat landing. Occasional gulls and Double-crested Cormorant are seen along the river. Regular raptors in the area include Northern Harrier, Broad-winged Hawk, American Kestrel, and Merlin. All 6 common swallows are regular including Purple Martin. This river location is probably the most reliable location for Brown Thrasher and Cedar Waxwing. Bohemian Waxwing are also possible. Clay-colored, White-throated, Vesper Sparrow, Bobolink, Eastern Meadowlark, and Brewer’s Blackbird are common in open fields. This is the most reliable location for Northern Cardinal in the entire county.
Aurora is a good location for winter finches in the fruit trees. Northern Shrike and Horned Lark are occasionally seen in winter and spring.
Directions: Aurora is located on County Hwy N, southwest of Kingsford, Michigan, across the Menominee River. River Drive is 1 mile west of the bridge on Florence County Highway N, 45.785711, -88.104610. The Aurora Boat Landing is on Sportsman Lane, 45.782454, -88.078123.
