Habitat:  Non-Native Grassland and Pasture, Cropland, Willow, Alder or Dogwood Swamp, Urban/Residential/Industrial, Open Water.

Best Birds:  Rails and shorebirds are occasional at a farm pond on Roach Lane.  Broad-winged, Rough-legged Hawk (winter), and American Kestrel are occasional in open areas.  Alder Flycatcher nest here.  Clay-colored, White-throated, Vesper Sparrow, Bobolink, and Eastern Meadowlark are regular, but uncommon in open fields.  Uncommon warblers include Black-and-White, Mourning, and Magnolia Warbler.

Brown Thrasher, Bohemian and Cedar Waxwing are often found near the intersection of Church Rd and County Highway U in large areas of Buckthorn.  Purple Finch is a year-round resident. Northern Shrike are occasional in autumn and winter.

Directions:  9 miles west of Iron Mountain, MI.  The town of Homestead consists of 6 one-mile roads about .5 to 1 mile apart around the convergence of County Highways C, N and U, 45.794735, -88.218977.  It lies roughly within Millers Road on the south, Roach Lane on the north, County Road U/N on the west and County Road B on the east. The Roach Road farm pond is at 45.80604, -88.22242.
