Habitat: Open Water, Marsh, Sedge Meadow, Conifer Bog.

Best Birds: This large relatively undeveloped complex of river, lake, emergent and submergent wetlands and adjacent sedge meadows, bog wetland near the inlet of the St. Croix River contains one of only two Black Tern colonies in Douglas County. Bald Eagle and Osprey are common with several pairs nesting on or near the flowage.

Winter visitors can find Trumpeter Swan and associated wintering waterfowl that utilize the open water created by the outlet of the dam.  For the best viewing the colder the better as frigid temps freeze most other open water areas and concentrate the swans here.

Directions: 42 niles SSE of Superior/2 miles north of Gordon on US Hwy 53, west 4.4 miles on North Flowage Lane.  The birds of St. Croix Flowage are best viewed via a boat that can be launched at one of two public boat landings, one the north side or near the dam.  Canoes are best for the upper portions of the flowage and river areas and can be launched from Old 53 just north of Gordon on the east side of the new Hwy 53.  The Wild Rivers Trail can be accessed from the landing also.
