CamRock County Park, Dane County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot

Habitat: Open Water, Marsh, Southern Hardwood Forest, Pine Plantation, Native and Restored Grasslands.

Best Birds: Hike the wide gravel path that runs north-south along the river and wander into any of the several sections of mountain-bike trail loops (where permitted). The riparian area has supported Warbling Vireo, Great-Crested Flycatcher and Prothonotary Warbler.  The wooded and edge attract many migrating warblers.The pines by Shelter #2 attract migrant Pine WarblerMourning Warbler can appear in any of the park’s wet edges.  Eastern Towhee and Brown Thrasher pairs breed.  If conditions are right, a small pond depression just south of the entrance to Shelter #1 can host shorebirds during migration and Solitary Sandpipers are found along the river itself during migration. 

The prairie sections of the park have good numbers of Field Sparrow.  The wooded sections are reliable for Wood Thrush.

Directions:  24 miles east of Madison on the Dane County border with Jefferson County.  Take Highway B south from Cambridge or north from Rockdale and park at either Shelter #1 (42.992161, -89.023001) or Shelter #2 (42.977987, -89.025375) for easy access to the extensive trail system.

This under-birded gem of a park in eastern Dane County has a wide variety of habitats that support a diverse set of birds in all seasons.
