Amundson Boat Landing

Amundson Boat Landing

Amundson Boat Landing, Dane County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot

Habitat:  Open Water

Best Birds:  Scoping north from this boat landing will yield large rafts of migratory diving ducks, dabbling ducks, grebes and mergansers in spring and fall migration.  Rarities can include Greater Scaup, Eared Grebe, Red-Necked Grebe and Western Grebe. Migrating Surf Scoter, White-Winged Scoter and Black-Scoter are also possible from this vantage point, especially in the fall. This location is also excellent for scoping gulls during migration and winter before the lake freezes over.  Large flocks of gulls are common, and Franklin’s and Lesser Black-Backed are possible.  In fall the best time to scope is just before sunrise or before dusk, especially if the water and air temperatures are similar (reduces shimmer effects).  In spring just before sunrise provides good viewing conditions.

Directions:  15 miles southeast of Madison.  From Highway 51 turn north on Quam Drive and head to the launch and parking area (42.949273, -89.259963).
