Rush Creek State Natural Area - South

Habitat:  Native and Restored Grassland, Marsh, Open Water.  

Best Birds:  Along Rush Creek Road look for Eastern Towhee, Blue-winged Warbler, Kentucky Warbler, and Scarlet Tanager.  In the marsh area look for Hooded Merganser, Green Heron, Sedge Wren and  Marsh Wren.  Near the spring east of the parking lot watch for Prothonotary Warbler.    

   From the parking lot take the trail across the road for a trip uphill to a goat prairie.  Along the way you can see woodpeckers, flycatchers, vireos, Wood Thrush, and Scarlet Tanager.  On the prairie look for Lark Sparrow and Field Sparrow.  If night birding from the Rush Creek Parking Lot listen for American Woodcock, Wilson Snipe, Barred Owl, Screech Owl, Whip-poor-will and possible Black-crowned Night Heron.

Directions:  32 miles s of laCrosse/3 miles north of Ferryville on State Highway 35. Parking lot is ½ mile east of State Highway 35 on Rush Creek Road at 43.374054, -91.136740.
