Pool 9-Mississippi River

Habitat:  Open Water, Bottomland Hardwoods, Beach, and Mud Flats.

Best Birds:  Each fall more than 400,000 Canvasback and 40,000 Lesser Scaup use Pool 9 for a resting and feeding area. The waysides and boat landings along State Highway 35 are good vantage points for observation of waterfowl, Tundra Swan and White Pelican. Pelicans will leave in mid-October while Tundra Swan remain until mid-November. Trumpeter Swan are present until stream outlets and shore-side springs freeze over.  Turkey Vulture and Peregrine Falcon nest on the bluffs along the river.  At access points along Pool 9 look for Bald Eagle, Green Heron, Great Egret, and Prothonotary Warbler,.  If you have a boat you can visit a Great Egret, Double-crested Cormorant, and Great Blue Heron rookery on the first island on the left upstream of Lynxville.  

Directions:  45 miles S of La Crosse, 11 miles north of Prairie du Chien on State Highway 35.  Pool 9 is the area upstream of Lock and Dam 9. From Lock and Dam 9 go north on State Highway 35 to Rush Creek Road north of Ferryville.  En route stop at access points, including Leitner Hollow Wayside, Lynxville/Morgan Creek backwaters, Cold Springs, and Ferryville Boat Landing.
