Lower Wisconsin State Riverway – Wauzeka Unit

Habitat:  Marsh, Native and Restored Grassland, Oak Forest, and Open Water

Best Birds:  In the marsh area look for Wood Duck, herons, and rails,Sandhill Crane, Red-shouldered Hawk, Trumpeter Swan, and Sedge Wren. In the woodlands look for Acadian Flycatcher, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and  Orchard Oriole.  In the grassland listen and look for American Woodcock, American Kestrel, and Field Sparrow.  At night, listen from the parking lot for Wilson Snipe, American Woodcock, Barred Owl, and Whip-poor-will.  

Directions:  62 miles SSE of LaCrosse/2 miles east of Wauzeka on State Highway 60.  Lower Wisconsin Riverway parking lot is located one quarter mile east of State Highway 131 on the south side of the highway at 43.1006697, -90.851589. If you want to hike into this 151 acre property either hike or drive east .4 of a mile along the highway and park off the roadway (43.099738, -90.847794). There is an orange and white telephone junction box marker located near here. Follow a small trail from the box up a short bank to a larger trail that will take you to a land point that reaches out into the marsh.
