Habitat: Native and Restored Grassland, Marsh, Oak Savanna.
Best Birds: From your vehicle or on foot look and listen for Bell’s Vireo, Yellow-breasted Chat, and Orchard Oriole on the steep dry native goat prairie. In marsh areas look for herons, Sandhill Crane, Marsh Wren, Sedge Wren, and Prothonotary Warbler. At Hughes Road and Citron West Road look for a large rock outcropping with caves on the hill to the west where Turkey Vulture have nested. These caves are on private property.
Directions: 54 miles SSE of la Crosse/One mile north of Steuben. From the junction of State Highways 131 and 179 go north across the Kickapoo River bridge. There are three parking areas for access. Parking and access from Hughes Road at 43.202661,-90.864219. Hike from here to bird the marsh. The next parking area is at the base of the hill at 43.212628,-90.868928. Climb the hill road to access the Oak Savanna and Dry/Goat Prairie. The third parking area is at the old homestead at Fire Number 50774 Citron Valley Road, 43.217306,-90.876860.

Wear appropriate shoes as the climb to the top is very steep. If birding the Hogback Prairie tuck your pants into your socks and wear bug repellent to deter Chiggers and ticks.
