McComb’s Ponds

Habitats: Open Water, Marsh, and Mudflats, Bottomland Hardwoods.

Best Birds: These ponds are productive in the spring and fall for migrating waterfowl and shorebirds. Dabbling and diving ducks may include Green-winged Teal, American Wigeon, Gadwall, BuffleheadHooded MerganserLesser ScaupRuddy Duck,  Common Goldeneye and Canvasback. Depending upon water levels, shorebirds seen here may include Pectoral Sandpiper, Semipalmated, Baird’s, Stilt, Buff-breasted, and Solitary Sandpiper, yellowlegs,  Wilson’s SnipeSanderlingShort-billed Dowitcher and Wilson’s Phalarope.

Raptors that have been recorded at this location include Bald Eagle, Peregrine FalconCooper’s Hawk, and Northern Harrier.

Flycatchers, a variety of swallows, and Rusty Blackbird (migration) frequent the pond. Also check the Elk Creek crossing west of the ponds for woodland birds.

Directions: 10 miles NW of Eau Claire/16 miles southwest of Chippewa Falls on 20th Avenue, west of 30th Street and east of 20th Street. Park on the shoulder and bird from the roadside. West of the ponds 20th Avenue crosses Elk Creek where some woodland birds may be found.
