Chippewa Moraine State Recreation Area

Habitat: Open Water, Marsh, Native and Restored Grassland, Northern Hardwood Forest.

Best Birds: Breeding birds found here include Hooded Merganser, Bufflehead, Black-billed Cuckoo, American Bittern, Broad-winged Hawk, Red-Headed Woodpecker (often at the feeders in winter), Yellow-throated Vireo, Common Raven, Brown Creeper, Tufted Titmouse, Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher, Wood Thrush. Golden-winged Warbler, Black-and-white Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Blue-winged Warbler, Bobolink, and Scarlet Tanager.

Directions: 38 miles N of Eau Claire/30 miles north of Chippewa Falls. Take Hwy M east 8 miles from New Auburn, or west 17 miles from Lake Holcombe, until you see the sign for the interpretive center. The Chippewa Moraine segment of the Ice Age Trail can be accessed from the interpretive Center, (45.22361, -91.41329). To reach the North of North Shattuck Lake SNA more directly drive to where the trail crosses 267th Avenue at 45.23129, -91.43700.

Site Address and Additional Information:

The Chippewa Moraine SRA includes 23 miles of trails including the Ice Age National Trail which travels through the Chippewa Moraine, connecting to the interpretive center and loop trails. To the northwest it leads to the oak-dominated forest of North Shattuck Lake State Natural Area. Birds can be found around the interpretive center and on trails to the north of the interpretive center, where there are small ponds.
