Menasha Conservancy

Habitat: Hardwood Swamp, Marsh, Open Water. 50 acres featuring isolated stands of hardwood swamp, a small cattail marsh, and several wetland ponds with 1.25 miles of trails.

Best Birds: Resident species diversity is limited by habitat and the size of site but the area attracts many spring and fall migrants due to its location near the north shore of Lake Winnebago. Permanent residents include Eastern Screech-Owl and Great Horned Owl.  Site visitors from a heron rookery located just east of the conservancy include Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, and Green Heron.  The hardwood swamps have many dead trees that are favored by Northern Flicker and Pileated Woodpecker.  The open water of the small cattail marsh should be checked for migrant waterfowl in season and harbors summer residents including Hooded Merganser, Swamp Sparrow, and often Virginia Rail (depending on water levels).

Directions: Five miles south of Appleton. Look for the Menasha Conservancy sign and parking lot (44.212291, -88.393316) on the north side of Hwy 10/114 across from Fire Lane 2 approximately one-half mile east of the junction of Oneida Street (US10) and 114.
