Habitat: Marsh, Open Water, Sedge Meadow.
Best Birds: Red-necked Grebe, Least Bittern, Marsh Wren, and Yellow-Headed Blackbird nest in the cattail/bulrush south and east of the pullout. Trumpeter Swan and Black Tern can be found throughout the flowage and Osprey and Bald Eagle often perch on the artificial nest platforms and dead trees. Scan the sedge marsh on the downstream west side of the dike for Sandhill Crane, American Bittern, Alder Flycatcher, and Sedge Wren.
Directions: 84 miles SW of Superior, and one mile north of Grantsburg. The Crex Meadows Visitor Center is located on the north side of Grantsburg just east of the intersection of County Roads D and F. Go east on County Road D 1.5 miles to Phantom Lake Road. The best vantage point is at the “pull-out”, a wide spot in the road approximately 0.75 miles from the south end of the flowage (45.818684, -92.650630).

Phantom Lake is the best example of the more than thirty flowages created to restore 8000 acres of wetlands on Crex Meadows. The south half of the flowage is primarily open marsh with large stands of cattail and bulrush. The north half is shallower and is dominated by sedge.
