Habitat: Open Water, Sedge Meadow, Jack Pine-Oak Barrens.  

Best Birds: Extensive cattail stands on Grettum Flowage provide habitat for Trumpeter Swan, Red-necked Grebe, Black TernMarsh Wren, and Yellow-headed Blackbird. Thousands of Sandhill Crane roost here in fall.  A huge sedge meadow dominates the entire west half of the property.  Yellow Rail, Le Conte’s and Nelson’s Sparrow are found here along with Virginia Rail, American Bittern, and Bobolink.  Vantage points are from Stolte Road and the Southwest Dike Trail parking area.  Use caution on this two rut trail.  It is best to walk from the parking area.

Directions: 89 miles SSW of Superior. From Highway 70 in Grantsburg, go south on Highway 87/48 4.5 miles to Grettum Dike Road.

This 14,000 acre property features several large flowages, extensive sedge meadows, and Jack Pine-Oak Barrens maintained in an early successional condition by prescribed burning and mechanical treatments.
