Crex Meadows Wildlife Area- Crex Sand Prairie

Habitat: Jack Pine-Oak Barrens.  The one mile stretch of road beginning at the Crex Sand Prairie along North Refuge Road to the Crex Rest Area takes you from early successional to late successional Jack Pine-Oak Barrens habitat.

Best Birds:  Upland Sandpiper, Sharp-tailed Grouse, Clay-Colored, Vesper, and Field Sparrow, Brown Thrasher and Eastern Towhee are found in the open, brushy areas along the beginning of this route. Grasshopper Sparrow are often heard\seen in the dense prairie grasses at the junction of Currey Road. Look for Red-headed Woodpecker and both cuckoos, Warbling and Yellow-throated Vireo, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Golden-winged, Black and White, and Chestnut-sided Warbler in the forests at the Rest Area.

Directions: 80 miles SSW of Superior. The Crex Meadows Visitor Center is located on the north side of Grantsburg.  Go north on County Road F 5.5 miles to North Refuge Road.
