Habitat: Sedge Meadows.
Best Birds: Probably the most sought-after birds at Crex are Yellow Rail, Le Conte’s and Nelson’s Sparrow. All three species are difficult to see but can be heard at night at Cranberry Dike and at other large sedge meadows on the property. Other representative species include Virginia Rail, American Bittern, Short-eared Owl, Sedge Wren, and Bobolink.
Reed Lake Marsh, in the northeast corner of Crex is the best location for finding sedge meadow species but is much less accessible. The parking area of the north side of Reed Lake and Main Dike Road east of the Pump House are good vantage points for the marsh.
Directions: 80 miles SSW of Superior. The Crex Meadows Visitor Center is located on the north side of Grantsburg. From there go north on County Road F to Main Dike Road, to East Refuge Road and Cranberry Dike.
