Namekagon Barrens SWA--North Unit, Burnett County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot
Habitat: Jack Pine-Oak Barrens, Conifer Bog.
Best Birds: The open barrens provide habitat for a population of Sharp-tailed Grouse and Upland Sandpiper. Other barrens species include Eastern Bluebird, Brown Thrasher, Purple Finch, Eastern Towhee, Vesper, Clay-colored, and Field Sparrow, and Brewer’s Blackbird. The Tamarac/Spruce Bog on the east side of Namekagon Trail is a likely spot for Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Yellow-rumped, Canada, and Nashville Warbler. Mourning Warbler are found in brushy areas along the roads and the surrounding Jack Pine stands are good habitat for Connecticut Warbler.
Directions: 46 miles S of Superior. From Danbury go north on Highway 35, 10 miles to St. Croix Trail, then west for 7 miles.

Most of this 6,500 acre property is maintained in an early successional stage through the use of prescribed burning. It also contains several small Conifer Bogs and is surrounded by commercial forest of Jack Pine and Red Pine plantations.
