Trempealeau NWR--Delta Point (Buffalo Co.), Buffalo County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot

Habitat: Marsh, Bottomland Hardwoods, Open Water.

Best Birds: The dike trails cross wetlands rich in ducks, herons and egrets, Sora and Virginia Rail.  Other breeding birds include Hooded Merganser, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Black Tern, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Willow Flycatcher, Yellow-throated Vireo, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Prothonotary Warbler, and Orchard Oriole.  The spring and fall passerines migration can be very strong along the point. During September and October thousands of ducks and hundreds of American White Pelican can be observed at Delta Point, and In November and early December hundreds of Tundra Swan may be present.

Directions: 35 miles northwest of La Crosse. Access to the Buffalo County sections of Trempealeau NWR are on dike trails starting at parking lots along Hwy 35/54. To reach Delta Point use the Great River Trail parking lot south of Hwy 35/54 just 200 ft east of the intersection with County Road P (44.071093, -91.55443). From there either bike or hike 0.6 miles southeast on the Great River Trail (Marshland Road) to the start of the Delta Point Trail. Delta Point trail follows a dike through sloughs and bottomland hardwoods for 1.25 miles to it’s end on a point projecting into an expansive backwater of the Mississippi River.

Access to the River Bottoms Unit with similar habitat starts at the parking lot south of Hwy 35/54 one mile east of County M (44.06844, -91.59737). Walk about 1 mile south to a boardwalk extending east into a slough.
