Upper Mississippi River NWR--Pool 4 (Buffalo Co.), Buffalo County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot

Habitat: Bottomland Hardwoods, Open Water, Marsh.

Best Birds: This area is home to ducks and Great Egret, both bitterns, terns and rails.  Land birds here include Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Red-shouldered Hawk, Broad-winged Hawk, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Red-headed Woodpecker, Willow Flycatcher, Yellow-throated Vireo, Marsh Wren, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Prothonotary Warbler, and Orchard Oriole.

Directions: 63 miles northwest of La Crosse. Limited views of this vast floodplain forest are possible from several boat landings along Hwy 25.  The best wilderness experience of this the largest delta floodplain forest in the upper Midwest is to travel the maze of bayous by boat. The first boat landing on Hwy 25 is 0.6 miles south of Nelson and the intersection with Hwy 35 (44.410697, -92.01471). There are three more landings to the south before reaching the state line.

This SNA is below the confluence of the Chippewa and Mississippi Rivers and within the Pool 4 section of the Upper Mississippi River NWR. The habitat is similar to that of the adjacent Tiffany SWA to the north.
