UW-Green Bay Campus and Arboretum

Arboretum: https://ebird.org/hotspot/L159722

Campus: https://ebird.org/hotspot/L1044429

Habitat: Oak-Hickory Forest, Southern Hardwood Forest, Native and Restored Grassland.

Best Birds: Along South Circle Drive, common edge-habitat species and early successional species such as Field Sparrow and Clay-colored Sparrow are found. Trails to the south access the Mahon Woods, which are excellent for Pileated Woodpecker, Great Horned Owl, and other forest species.

The eastern portion of the campus intersects the Niagra Escarpment, a unique habitat of cedar and exposed limestone. Springs offer open water in winter that typically keep some half-hardy species around all year. Golden-crowned Kinglet winter in the cedars.

The northern portion of campus was a golf course that is partially restored to an Oak Savanna. Orchard Oriole is common and Red-headed Woodpecker is occasional in the large oaks. The old golf course is a good location to search for migrants.

Crabapple trees in the interior of campus, especially near the Cofrin Library, Mary Ann Cofrin Hall, and the Laboratory Sciences building should be checked in winter for Bohemian Waxwings and other unusual species to the area. Peregrine Falcon and a large colony of Cliff Swallow annually nests on the steep walls of the library.

Directions: Exit State Highway 57 at the Nicolet Drive exit and follow signs to UW-Green Bay. Proceed roughly one mile and enter the campus at South Circle Drive or Main Entrance Drive on the east side of the road. The arboretum encircles the campus with extensive trails.
